Rally Squirrel!!!!

My beloved Cardinals are one win away from making it past the first round of the playoffs and proving to all that their wild card status isn’t a fluke. Just imagine if they had Adam Wainwright this year.. wow. Anyway. That’s not the best part of the games. It’s the RALLY SQUIRREL!!!

How awesome is this. A squirrel has somehow found its way onto the national stage. I wonder if we can ever look at the rodents that live in our trees and yards ever again in the same light. This is great. The squirrel is now an official part of baseball lore, the Cardinals are on their way to Philly to take down the hated Eastern Division champs and the girl is thrilled because she thinks Bob is helping her team out. From the Post dispatch story above….

Update: The squirrels may be Cardinals fans after all.

The fifth inning of Wednesday’s game was punctuated by the return of a Busch Stadium squirrel, although it’s not yet clear if this was the same squirrel from Tuesday night’s shenanigans.

With the score 3-2 and one out, a squirrel dashed from the first-base dugout, and in front of the plate and Skip Schumaker. The squirrel darted into the stands.

@BuschSquirrel is still tweeting, and seems to be making plans for Friday’s game in Philadelphia.

Previous story:

Without a doubt, Tuesday night’s Cardinals game was squirrelly.

It was the bottom of the sixth inning in the (so far) scoreless NLDS Game 3 between the Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies. Cardinals second baseman Ryan Theriot was at the plate when a squirrel streaked across the field, delaying the game.

Theriot singled, but the Cards did not score in the inning and ended up losing the game, 3-2. The squirrel, however, escaped and lives on as @BuschSquirrel on (where else?) Twitter. “We need to win, im not ready to hibernate yet,” he tweeted during the game.

The Cardinals have had previous run-ins with squirrels at Busch Stadium. On Sept. 4, 2007, a squirrel rushed the field from the Cardinals bullpen. Stadium officials captured it near the Pirates’ dugout, but the squirrel was persistent and jumped into the stands. Eventually, he was caught and released outside the stadium. He became known as the Rally Squirrel — the Cards won that game, 6-2.

The Cardinals will try to best the Phillies again tonight in Game 4. No word yet from the squirrel on his plans.
